The first half of Chris Howlett's talk covers the design, build, placement and use of the giant prefabricated harbours known as Mulberry that were used to give the allies assured calm water for landing troops and supplies after the D-day landings of June 1944. After the harbours were no longer required many of the components were re-used sometimes in very distant places.
The second half of the talk covers a survey carried out by the UKHO and MMT of the remains of Mulberry B, the harbour built for use by the British at Arromanche-les-Bains (another Mulberry, Mulberry A, was built off Omaha beach for use by the Americans). It used high definition multibeam sonar to map and image the underwater remains, that are still remarkable extensive.
Chris Howlett spent 30 years at the UKHO before leaving and working as a hydrographic consultant.
